Floods-hit Kunar families call for emergency assistance

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Families affected by yesterday’s flash floods in eastern Kunar province on Tuesday called on the government and humanitarian organizations to provide them with emergency assistance.

The affected families complain they suffered financial and life losses and their houses were washed away by the floods.

Minhajuddin, a resident of Sagi area of Asadabad district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that lack of shelter was his main problem and he also needed food items.

He said: “The floodwater partially destroyed my house, but took away all out belongings, I ask the government and other humanitarian organizations to help us in building shelter and provide us with primary food items.”

Obaidullah, a tribal elder of Qamchai area of Watapur district, said the recent floods damaged water heads and agricultural farms.

He said: “The floods destroyed crops, water heads, linking roads and other things.”

Provincial Disaster Management department officials said the floods killed five people, destroyed 50 houses and over 405 kilometers of highways and other linking roads.

The floods also damaged hundreds of acres of cultivations, water-heads and irrigation channels.

Ezatullah Karimi, another official of the disaster management authority said: “According to our reports, two children, a man and a woman have been killed in Asadabad and another woman was killed in Asmar district. The residents of Kunar province suffered heavy financial losses as well.”

He added they were working with different humanitarian institutions to assess the damages in Kunar and help the affected people.

Earlier, Kunar residents suffered life and financial losses due to rains induced floods.
