Herat bag makers seek ban on alike products

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Some bag makers in western Herat province have complained about the stagnated market and said if not supported they have no option but to halt their activities.

Qari Farhard, one of the bag sellers and producers, told Pajhwok Afghan News the market condition of their products had declined now compared to the past two years.

He said in the past they produced annually up to 3,000 to 5,000 boxes but currently this number had declined to 1,500.

He said besides the shortage of market another problem they suffered was the availability of alike imported products in the market.

He said if the market condition of bags remained the same the local factories would halt their production.

He asked the government to stop the import of alike products in order strengthen local market.

Noorullah Mohammadi, another seller and producers of bags, expressed concern about the market condition of wardrobe boxes and said the first step the government need take is halt of the similar imported products.

He said they have the ability to meet the demand of all provinces but they needed complete support in this regard.

He said they produced all type of bags with high quality and asked people to buy their product.

Some economic experts in this province consider the consequences of not using domestic products to the detriment of investors and say that businessmen and investors should be supported by the government and the people, and they should be given the necessary facilities and also a domestic market for their products.

Gulab Haider, one of the economic affairs experts, said: “Government should stop the import of similar products that we are producing locally.”

Referring to the continuation of imports he said this cause comparative business to disappeared and could become a huge problems for the country in the future, the country remain dependent on imports for ever.

Mawlavi Bashir Mohammad Seerat, head of the Commerce Department, said after inspection tariff on wardrobe boxes and other materials would increase.

He stated that these tariffs will increase from 10% to 30% in the import of similar bags and shoes, and from 10% to 20% in plastic goods, which, according to him, is an outstanding support for investors and domestic producers.
