TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): A newly formed committee tasked with preventing arbitrarily digging of deep wells in central Uruzgan province held its maiden meeting on Thursday.
The provincial governor chaired the meeting of the meeting tasked with preventing arbitrarily digging of deep wells or boreholes in the province.
Headed by the Department of Justice, the committee includes representatives from the River Basin Authority, the court, police headquarters and the intelligence department.
In the first meeting, Governor Maulvi Enayatullah Shuja said this committee was responsible to prevent deep wells dug arbitrarily in the provincial capital and districts.
He said those needed deep wells in houses would be given land and permission by the committee.
According to him, digging of boreholes in some areas has caused the underground water to plummet.
Meanwhile, head of the committee judge Maulvi Khairullah Haqnama said that after the formation of this committee, the digging of a number of boreholes in Tirinkot city had been stopped.
Some residents are also happy over the prevention of arbitrary digging of deep wells.
