MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Tribal elders of Kalman valley in the Alingar district of eastern Laghman province have fixed the Walwar rate — an amount paid by the groom to the bride — at 15,000 afs.
Malak Gulbaddin, a tribal elder of the valley, told Pajhwok Afghan News previously, the Walwar rate was 300,000 to 500,000 afs in their area.
He said tribal elders of the area gathered and fixed the amount at 15,000 afs.
Asadullah, another tribal elder of the area, said about 3,000 families lived in their area and most of them were poor.
He added: “I engaged my son after the decision. I will give 15,000 afs in dowry to bride’s family before the wedding.”
He said that he did not take Walwar in his daughter’s wedding and paid all the expenses by self-basis.
He asked parents to not make any differences between son and daughter.
Meanwhile, Information and Culture Department officials also welcomed the decision of the tribal elders.
Mohammad Nader, an official of the department, asked tribal elders in other areas to reduce Walwar rate in order to prevent unnecessary wedding expenses.
