KABUL (Pajhwok): Electronic scanners are being installed at different ports across Afghanistan, the caretaker government announced on Saturday.

Under a $113 million contract signed between the Ministry of Finance and a private firm today, 33 scanners will be installed at 12 customs units.

A statement from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs said the project, to be executed in two years, was aimed to strengthen security and check the menace of smuggling.

The scanners will be installed at Torkham, Hairatan, Spin Boldak, Islam Qala, Torghandi, Nimroz, Abu Nasr Farahi, Khost, Paktia, Aqina and Sher Khan ports for the screening of all types of goods.

Around 2,000 individual would get jobs on the project, a gian stride towards modernising Afghanistan’s customs infrastructure.
