HRW calls for end to curbs on Afghan women

KABUL (Pajhwok): Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to lift restrictions on women and girls.

In response to such calls, the caretaker government has consistently claimed preserving women’s rights in the framework of the Shariah law.

In a post on X, HRW said: “As the Paris Olympics begin, millions of women and girls in Afghanistan are being denied the right to education and sports.”

The rights group lamented: “The Olympics and Para Olympics have begun, but in Afghanistan millions of women and girls are denied the right to play sports.”

However, the interim government has repeatedly asserted that the rights of girls and women in Afghanistan are fully protected under Islamic law.

The temporary suspension of girls' education beyond the sixth grade will be lifted once a suitable environment is ensured, according to IEA.

The Paris Olympic Games, which include three male and three female athletes from Afghanistan, began on Friday and will run until August 11.
