KABUL (Pajhwok): Reformist Masoud Pezeshkian, who won last the runoff vote earlier in the month, has formally been endorsed as new president, IRNA reported.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei officially endorsed Pezeshkian as the ninth president of the country at a ceremony in Tehran on Sunday.
In a decree from his office, Khamenei said: “I endorse Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian as the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Speaking on the occasion, the incoming president hailed the supreme leader’s wisdom that paved the ground for the nation’s effective participation in the election.
Set to assume office tomorrow (Tuesday), he viewed adherence to the law as the only way for the government to address people’s problems and measure up to their expectations.
Pledging to work for national unity preserving religious values, Pezeshkian his administration would ensure justice and fair play.
Pezeshkian won the July 5 runoff election, defeating Saeed Jalili. The first round of the snap election was held after Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash on May 19.
