US calls on IEA to improve human rights record

KABUL (Pajhwok): US  State Department Deputy spokesman Vedant Patel has called on the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to substantially improve their human rights record before any normalizations of relations.

He told at press briefing that to date no country had publicly announced that it recognized the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan.

He added: “We continue to – in close coordination with allies and partners – call on the Taliban that they need to substantially improve their human rights record before any normalizations of relations.”

Reporters also asked Petal about military parade held by IEA at Bagram Military Airfield, but he refused to comment on this issue.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) celebrated the third anniversary of its re-establishment at a ceremony held on August 14 at Bagram Military Airfield. The event featured a military parade and was attended by several high-ranking officials.
