NEILI (Pajhwok): Local residents have started constructing a check dam to improve the agricultural situation in central Daikundi province.

The Gul Badam check dam was inaugurated in the presence of local people in mountains of a remote and neglected area of Bala Qul Shinia on Wednesday.

Mohammad Akhlaqi, Project Director, said the check dam would store stray waters in winter and early spring and improve the agricultural situation and generate electricity

He said about 500 families will directly benefit from this water.

According to him, this project is funded by local residents and patriotic people, but it will cost millions of afghanis.

Meanwhile, Abdul Khaliq Najiz, the project engineer, told media persons that the check dam will be built with a height of 35 to 40 meters and a width of 15 meters.

This check dam has the storage capacity of about 150,000 cubic meters of water and considering the availability of funds, its capacity can be increased, he explained.

On the other hand, Hussain Ali Nikzad said droughts of last few years had destroyed agricultural and horticultural properties and forced people to migrate.

Residents of the village spent a lot of money to construct water wells and water piping system, but they did not get the desired result and they were forced to look for another alternative way and decided to build a water dam.

“It is not possible to build this dam without cooperation of good and patriotic people”.

Residents asked patriotic people to cooperate in construction of the reservoir.
