Nangyali Habibi, an official of Rural Rehabilitation and Development department, said the bridge was being constructed in Mehrabad area of Tirinkot, the provincial capital.

Funded by a local resident Mullah Wali Jan Hamza, the project will take six months to complete, he said.

He added the bridge was 40 meters long and five meters wide.

He said: "The bridge will cost 9 million afghanis and will be completed in six months."

The previous bridge, made of cables and boards, was recently destroyed by flash floods, he explained.

Meanwhile, residents of the area were also happy over the construction of the bridge.

Recent flash floods washed away crops on 4,786 hectares of land and destroyed four bridges in the province.
