Bennett in region to assess Afghan HR situation

KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett has travelled to Turkey and Qatar to assess the human rights situation in Afghanistan before 57th session Human Rights Council (HRC).

HRC 57th session is scheduled to take place next week in Geneva, where Bennett will present his report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan.

The rapporteur wrote on X: “Before @UN_HRC 57 next week, I’m visiting the region discussing the human rights situation in #Afghanistan with diverse groups of Afghan women and men & also meeting experts and government representatives. After a fruitful few days in #Turkiye, I've now reached #Qatar.”

During his trip to the region, he will meet various segments of Afghanistan’s society, as well as experts and officials from the countries involved.

On August 21, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) had banned Bennet’s entry to the country.

Zabihullah Mujahid, chief spokesman for IEA, told DW the ban had been slapped on Bennett for his “propaganda” against Afghanistan.

In response to the travel ban imposed on him, the UN rapporteur had urged the interim government in Kabul to reverse its decision.
