KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Construction work on a canal has been launched and the project in southeastern Khost province is estimated to cost more than 93,000 US dollars, an official said on Thursday.
Officials said the water canal was being built by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Arikhel area of Ismail Khel Mandozai district.
Shamal Khuram sub-division director Abdul Qayoom Sabit told Pajhwok Afghan News the canal was 1,206 meters long and will irrigate 122 hectares of land.
He said the canal will be completed in five months and benefit 730 families. He said FAO was trying to implement different welfare projects for residents.
Nasrullah, a resident, told Pajhwok the canal would get filled with mud and dirt brought along by flash floods and its construction will facilitate people and he will irrigate his agricultural lands on time.
Mohammad Raqib, another resident, said with the implementation of this project, agriculture harvests will increase.
Mohammad Raqib asked officials to supervise the canal in order to ensure that standard materials were used in its construction.
Recently, many small dams have been constructed in some districts of the country in order to store water for irrigation and several others are being constructed.
