Jujube yields 13pc up in Farah this year

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): The Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department of western Farah province on Tuesday reported a 13 percent increase in jujube yield in the province this year.

Head of the Department Maulvi Abdul Ghani Abid told Pajhawok Afghan News jujube cultivated on 1,262 hectares of land in Farah produced 37,854 metric tons last year.

But jujube on 1,336 hectares of land this year produced 42,752 metric tons, showing a 13 percent surge.

According to Abid, Farah’s jujube has good quality which is exported to Pakistan as well as some provinces.

On the other hand, farmers complain about lack of buyers in the province.

Mahmood Amiri, a farmer of Oranjiran village of Qala-i-Kah district, told Pajhwok Farah’s jujube in Qala-i-Kah district has good quality.

“Last year, every gardener collected more than 700 kilograms of jujube, but this year winds and rains damaged the trees, which produced some 490 and 560 kilograms”.

Meanwhile, this year, the prices of jujube are lower than last year, Jaihon, a resident of Gonahkan village, said.

He said last year the price of one kilo of good quality jujube was 300 afghanis, but this year the price dropped to around 200 afghanis.

Farmers asked government officials to find a market for jujube and other agricultural products.

Jujube is a rare fruit used in making medicines in addition to eating.
