LSD vaccination drive kicks off in Helmand

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The vaccination campaign against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) has kicked off in southern Helmand province, an officials said on Wednesday.

The campaign is implemented with the financial support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) along with cooperation of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation department of the province.

At the inaugural ceremony, the Provincial Agriculture Director Mohammad Aslam Bashardost told Pajhwok Afghan News that all of the cows will be vaccinated against LSD in both provincial capital and 13 district of Helmand. “The total of 45,000 jabs of will be administered to cows by vets.” He said.

The officials try to manage the drive well because the disease breakout several times in some districts.

Aslam said: “Compared to the previous year, the cases of lumpy skin disease appeared less, the doses of vaccine have been also reduced and we try to eradicate the illness completely.”

A veterinarian doctor of Nad Ali district Humayoun told Pajhwok that 1,500 jabs of the vaccine will be administered to cows in that district, the jabs would be administered to cows threatened by lumpy skin.

The ranchers call the lumpy skin a dangerous illness because it spread from infected animals to health ones and they are happy about the campaign.

Noor Ali, a director of a cow farm in Lashkargah says, the vaccine of lumpy skin is very good for animals, it saves them from being killed.

He said: “The lumpy skin vaccine is very good for cows, the illness spread last year and killed many cows, people suffered financial losses, if it is not administered to cows, they will die.”
