KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran said on Wednesday it desired stability and security in the region, but would act strongly in case of any aggression, from Israel.
On Tuesday night, Iran fired nearly 200 missiles on Israeli military bases as part of an operation codenamed “True Promise 2”, according to Tasnim news agency.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani wrote on X the missile barrage was in line with the country’s right to legitimate self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
Kanaani said: “According to Article 51 of the UN Charter, we acted in line with our legitimate right to defend our security, sovereignty against aggression.”
He explained the Islamic republic prioritised regional stability, but would respond harshly to acts of aggression.
The spokesman warned no action against Iran's sovereignty and national security would go unanswered.
Iranian Chief of Army Staff Mohammad Bagheri said: “Since the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Tehran had repeatedly requested the US, EU and others to force Israel to exercise restraint and reach a ceasefire in Gaza.”
He commented: “We have gone through a tough time of restraint, but the Zionist regime with support from the US stepped up its criminal activities.”
But after the assassinations of Hezbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Sardar Nilfroushan, the supreme military advisor to IRGC in Lebanon, the situation was no longer bearable, Bagheri concluded.
