Drive to cover up deep wells kicks off in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): A campaign has been launched to cover up deep wells in southern Uruzgan province amid at protection of people’s lives particularly of children, an official said on Sunday.

Qari Agha Wali Enam, the provincial government spokesperson, told Pajhwok Afghan News, on the directives of the Governor House, a charity organization has completed the works of securing three deep wells by building surrounding walls in the Khurma area of Tirinkot, the provincial capital.

This campaign would be extended to other provinces of the province as well, Enam added.

The officials have also encouraged several other governmental and humanitarian organizations to cooperate in this process.

A number of the local people have appreciated this move securing deep wells to protect public lives.

A tribal leader of Khurma area Malik Esmatullah said: “There are three deep wells in our village and they all got secured by building surrounding walls around each one of them.”

He confirmed that some animals, vehicles and people fell to these wells in the past.

After a failed attempt to rescue a minor after falling down into a deep well in Ghazni, the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) requested people to cover their deep wells to prevent such unpleasant incidents.
