KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) says as many as 1.6 million SIM cards have been registered over the last three months.
Inayatullah Alokozai, spokesman for MoCIT, acknowledged the issue of illegal SIM card sales in the market after the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) takeover.
He wrote on X MoCIT had thrashed out a plan curbing the practice and shared it with telecom firms.
The spokesman explained the ministry had put in place a procedure to register all SIM cards in the country.
The official claimed the nationwide process was ongoing, with the ministry asking telecom firms to share reports about those who want to purchase or register new SIM cards to ensure customers meet the requirements.
He said 1.6 million SIM cards had been registered in line with the procedure over the last three months.
Alokozai said in order to facilitate citizens, the ministry urged the telecom companies to set up mobile teams for registering SIM cards.
The total number of active SIM cards in Afghanistan has reached about 25 million, the official concluded.
