KABUL (Pajhwok): Ex-President Hamid Karzai, former chief of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah some countries such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Oman have condemned Israel's overnight attack on Iran, calling it a violation of international laws.
Israel conducted airstrikes on Iran early on Saturday, responding to what it termed “months of continuous attacks.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced they were carrying out “precise strikes on military targets,” accusing Iran of “relentlessly attacking Israel” since October 7, 2023.
The Iranian army confirmed two soldiers were killed after it said the attacks on Saturday targeted military bases but resulted in only “limited damage”, the barrage marking an escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two countries.
“Former president Hamid Karzai condemns Israel's attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is a violation of the national sovereignty of this close neighbor and our brother country. Such attacks become the basis for increasing tension in the region and threaten international peace and security,” his office said in a statement.
Karzai asked the responsible international authorities to take necessary and appropriate measures to stop the expansion of the tension in the region.
Ex-chief of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah said: “It is with profound sorrow that we have received news of Israeli attack on Iran following attacks and human crimes in Gaza in last years, aggressive attacks in Lebanon in recent weeks
He vehemently condemned the attack on neighbouring country.
Dr. Abdullah adds: "We emphasize that Israel's ill-considered attacks will not only cause the expansion and continuation of the war in the region and a new military alignment, but will also have unfortunate consequences and effects on the civilians and innocent people of our region.”
Saudi Arabia Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement: “Condemning the military targeting Iran as a “violation of its sovereignty” and international laws, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all parties to “exercise the utmost restraint and reduce escalation”.
The ministry said in a statement, “The Kingdom affirms its firm position in its rejection of the continued escalation in the region and the expansion of the conflict that threatens the security and stability of the countries and peoples of the region.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on his X handle: “Deeply worried by the recent act of Israeli aggression against Iran. Such actions threaten not only regional peace and stability but also violate principles of sovereignty and international law.
“While strongly condemning this action, Pakistan stands with Iran and its other neighbors in pursuit of peace and urges all parties to act with restraint to avoid further escalation.”
At the same time, Badr Albusaidi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, wrote on his X handle: “We are very concerned by Israeli aggression on Iran this morning. Thankfully the damage appears limited, and we dearly hope there are no casualties.
It’s time for the world to wake up to the urgent need to address the root causes of this crisis , above all Israel’s illegal and brutal occupation of Palestinian lands.”
