FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): The Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department of western Farah province says about 13,500 tonnes of mung beans have been harvested in the province this year, showing a 74 percent spike over last year’s yield.

Abdul Ghani Abid, an official of the department, told Pajhwok Afghan News last year, mung beans or green gram were cultivated on 1,578 hectares of land, which produced 3,650 tonnes.

He said the crop was cultivated on 6,781 hectares of land this year, which produced 13,562 tonnes, showing a 74 percent surge.

He added the cultivation of mung beans had given good results in the province and a lot of yield could be obtained from it at a low cost.

The yield is also exported to Herat, Kandahar and Helmand provinces.

On the other hand, farmers also voiced satisfaction over the mung beans yield and market.

Mohammad Wazir, a farmer from Khak-i-Safid district, said that he had cultivated mung beans on his 30 acres of land and obtained a good harvest.

He linked the spike in this year's harvest with favorable weather and rains.

Ghulam Sakhi, another farmer from Bakwa district, told Pajhwok that there was a good harvest of mung beans this year in the district.

Farmers in Farah say if a regular irrigation system is provided to their crops, the yields could further improve.
