JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The municipality has directed poultry sellers to slaughter chickens at the slaughterhouse in Jalalabad city, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province.
However, poultry sellers called the decision unacceptable.
The municipality says the decision was made because poultry sellers did not consider hygiene and often sold dead chickens to people.
Jalalabad’s Poultry Association called the municipality’s decision injustice and added they would not accept it.
Khanullah Kotwal, head of the association, urged the Municipality to reconsider its decision so poultry meat sellers could get rid of the problem.
Meanwhile, poultry sellers also acknowledged that some poultry sellers did not consider hygiene and cleanliness in their work.
Irshad, a poultry seller, asked the municipality to allow them to slaughter chicken in their own places.
He said the municipality should set up hygiene and cleanliness rules for them.
Bostan, another poultry seller, assured that they would observe cleanliness in their work.
On the other hand, residents of Jalalabad city also held different opinions about the municipality’s decision.
Rahmat Shah, an inhabitant of Jalalabad city, called the decision useful because many chicken sellers did not observe hygiene in their work.
However, Syed Khan, another resident of the provincial capital, said if the whole city’s chickens were slaughtered in the slaughterhouse every day, it would be difficult to observe hygiene.
Pajhwok Afghan News tried to contact the municipality for comment on poultry sellers’ concerns, but did not succeed.
However, Jalalabad Municipality wrote in an explanation on its Facebook page the decision was made to create cleanliness and address health and environmental problems in the city.
It said they strived to find other solutions to the problem, but they had no other options except the slaughterhouse.
