KABUL (Pajhwok): Forced to reverse his chaotic martial law decree, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is under mounting pressure to stand down.

He is facing backlash from his own party, with the country’s opposition planning to bring treason charges against the embattled leader, according to CNN.

The short-lived overnight presidential decree threw South Korea into disarray. The major opposition Democratic Party said it had started formalising treason charge plans against Yoon.

The party warned of initiating impeachment proceedings against Yoon if he did not quit immediately over his martial law declaration.

Meanwhile, the ruling People Power Party is weighing issuing a call for the resignation of the entire cabinet and the dismissal of the defence minister.

Although the government upheld Yeol’s proposal to lift martial law, protests grew over the presidential move. The parliament scrapped the order imposing martial law, which remained in force for just about six hours.
