KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): A kurash wrestling contest featuring 100 athletes took place in Qala-i-Zal district of northern Kunduz province last night.
In a statement sent to media outlets by provincial Sport and Physical Fitness department, the department said the event was aimed at further encouraging kurash wrestlers.
The statement added: “The event was arranged only for one night where fifty of participants defeated their opponents, the aim of this event was the development of this local and ancient style of wrestling.”
Besides kurash style wrestlers, a number of other ordinary-style-wrestlers of northern Baghlan, Faryab, Sar-i-Pul, Balkh and Sheberghan also participated.
A number of kurash wrestlers described this style of sport one of the most impressive belt-wrestling styles.
Mohammd Rafiq, a wrestler, said: “I am happy that I participated in this style of wrestling, we want this style of sport to be paid more attention and supported by the government.”
Sayed Mohammad, another wrestler, said: “This is an ancient and traditional sport of Afghanistan, such events further narrow the gap between provinces of this country.”
This is while a number of other wrestlers asked the government to arrange more such healthy events.
Kurash is an ancient traditional belt-wrestling style which is mostly based on the ability, speed and talent of each wrestler.
