Gymnastics competition kicks off in Kabul

KABUL (Pajhwok): A gymnastics tournament featuring 100 athletes from 18 provinces has been launched to select best athletes for the national team.

The two-day competition began in Kabul by the National Gymnastics Federation (NGF).

Athletes from Kabul, Nangarhar, Laghman, Khost, Paktia, Zabul, Herat, Ghazni, Balkh, Ghor, Kunduz, Helmand, Kandahar, Baghlan, Bamyan, Takhar, Jawzjan, and Maidan Wardak provinces are participating in the event.

At the opening ceremony Mohammad Fahim Qayomi, professional vice president at NGF and the national team’s coach, told Pajhwok Afghan News the fourth round of the two-day Afghanistan national gymnastics team selection competition kicked off today.

The competitions were aimed at selecting best athletes for the national gymnastics team, he added.

According to Qayomi, 18 best athletes will be selected for the country’s national team.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Wahid Akbar, an athlete, explained holding such competitions was important for them and they had made full preparations for it. He hoped to make it to the national team.

Akbar asked officials to pay attention to gymnastics so that this sport can reach all provinces of the country.

NGF was established in 1364 solar year under the framework of the Afghanistan Department of Physical Education and Sports.
