JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Nearly 2,329 beggars have been rounded up and went through resignation and biometric processes in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, and some districts during ongoing year, an official said on Thursday.
Police Spokesperson Sayed Tayyib Hammad said the purpose of rounding up beggars was to identify needy and non-needy persons and provide deserving people with aid and assistance.
These people were collected from Jalalabad city and some districts, including children, women, men, the disabled, the elderly, and girls.
He added that after collecting these people, they were registered and biometrically identified, the needy and the non-needy were identified, guarantees were taken from the families of the non-needy beggars, and the needy were referred to government and non-government organizations for assistance.
During this period, 218 people were assisted by the Afghan Red Crescent Society, 90 by the Department of Labor and Social Affairs, and 7 by the Department of Martyrs and Disabled Persons.
On the other hand, some residents of Nangarhar province are happy with this project and say that people are facing problems due to the increase in beggars.
Mohammadullah, who owns a shop selling electronic equipment at the Mokhaberat Square in Jalalabad city, says that many beggars are not in need and have turned this activity into a business.
He says that now, in addition to needy beggars, there are more beggars and artisans in Jalalabad city, and if they are collected from the city, many problems will be reduced.
With the coming to power of the Islamic Emirate, a special commission was formed in cities and districts to collect beggars, which has collected thousands of beggars across the country and biometrically registered them.
