Afghanistan, Iran plan joint mineral economic zone

KABUL (Pajhwok): A member of the Iranian Parliament's Industries and Mines Commission Amir Toukali Roudi has announced plans to create a joint mining special economic zone between Iran and Afghanistan.

In an interview with Tasnim News Agency, Roudi explained that the initiative was aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries and making efficient use of shared border resources.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to sustainable development and job creation in the region, he said.

“Necessary measures are being taken to expedite the communication corridor and establish the joint mining special economic zone at the zero border point,” Roudi said.

He also highlighted plans to accelerate customs operations in Khaf, a border province, and streamline international transit and trade processes.

The Iranian Railways Company has pledged to build a logistics and transportation center in Khaf, transforming it into a key hub for regional transit and rail transportation.

Afghanistan possesses mineral resources valued at over three trillion US dollars.

China has also expressed interest in the extraction of minerals in Afghanistan in coordination with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) in addition to Islamic Republic of Iran.
