KABUL (Pajhwok): Rina Amiri has completed her three-year tenure as the US special envoy for Afghan women, girls, and human rights.
In a post on X, Amiri wrote: “Tomorrow will mark my last day as the US Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls & Human Rights.”
She stressed the Afghan people deserved better and the world must support the brave women and men of Afghanistan, who represented the best hope for a stable, peaceful nation.
It remains uncertain who will replace Amiri and if the position will continue. Her departure comes amid significant criticism of her tenure.
The 55-year-old, who fled Afghanistan as a child and settled in California with her family, previously served in the State Department under Barack Obama.
She was appointed as the special envoy for Afghan women, girls and human rights on December 29, 2021 by the Biden administration.
