KABUL (Pajhwok): Several prominent political and sports figures in Afghanistan have mourned the death of Ali Reza Asahi, a gold medalist and two-time champion in master bodybuilding and a member of the national team, calling it a great loss.
Asahi, who passed away in Kabul on Thursday after battling an illness, was renowned for his dedication and achievements in bodybuilding.
Former President Hamid Karzai shared his condolences on his X page, stating that Asahi was a hardworking individual who achieved bodybuilding success through immense determination. Karzai described his death as a significant loss.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, former Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, also expressed his sorrow on Facebook, saying: “The remembrance of the late Asahi, as a symbol of effort, hard work, perseverance, and dedication to bringing pride to the people of Afghanistan, will remain eternal.”
Rashid Khan, captain of Afghanistan's national cricket team, conveyed his sadness over Asahi's demise, offering his condolences to the family and promising support during this difficult time.
Mustafa Hashimi, a spokesman for the Afghanistan Football Federation, praised Asahi as both an outstanding athlete and a role model, writing: “Ali Reza was not only a distinguished athlete but also a symbol of determination and pride for both the youth and elders of this land. His name will be forever honored in Afghanistan’s sports history.”
Hashimi also described Asahi’s death as a significant loss to the country’s sports community.
Khalid Zadran, spokesman for the Kabul police, echoed these sentiments, referring to Asahi as one of Afghanistan’s most prominent sports figures.
Ali Reza Asahi, who won the world championship in master bodybuilding twice, claimed his most recent title in 2024. He was also awarded an official coaching diploma by the World Bodybuilding and Physique Federation (WBPF).
