KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran's new Ambassador in Afghanistan Ali Reza Bigdeli has emphasised that proximity and shared interests between Tehran and Kabul necessitate regular communication between officials and the people of both nations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi visited Kabul on Sunday for a day-long trip, leading a high-level political and economic delegation.
During his visit, Araghchi held meetings with senior officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, including Prime Minister Mullah Hassan Akhund, Foreign Minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi and Defense Minister Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid.
In an interview with ISNA on Monday, Ambassador Bigdeli remarked that neighbouring countries inevitably face a range of diverse and interconnected issues.
He noted: "These shared interests, challenges, and needs make it essential for governments and leaders of neighbouring nations to establish and maintain effective communication, enabling them to address mutual concerns and advance their interests."
When asked whether Seyed Abbas Araghchi’s visit signified Iran's recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), Bigdeli clarified: "Recognition is a process governed by international law, and it involves specific criteria and unique considerations."
Reflecting on his trip, Araghchi described the visit as highly productive. He stated that discussions with Afghan officials focused on critical topics, including border security, water resource management, and the situation of Afghan refugees.
Speaking to reporters in Tehran after his return, Araghchi highlighted the positive developments in Tehran-Kabul relations, noting improved understanding and increased cooperation between the two countries compared to the past.
