KABUL (Pajhwok): South Korea has donated three million US dollars in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan to support vulnerable people, the United Nations said on Monday.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) welcomed South Korea’s contribution, hoping the assistance would benefit tens of thousands of vulnerable Afghans.
According to a statement from UNHCR, the funding will enable the refugee agency to provide essential aid to internally displaced persons, returnees and other at-risk communities in Afghanistan.
It noted decades of conflict, ongoing natural and climatic disasters and harsh winters had displaced many families.
The UN agency will use the assistance to build shelters for approximately 400 families, benefiting around 2,800 people.
Additionally, the funds will support psychological and social services for 34,000 people. The project will be implemented in priority areas for returnees, as identified by UNHCR.
“We are extremely grateful for this strong support from the Republic of Korea,” said Arafat Jamal, UNHCR’s representative in Afghanistan.
“It will help us provide both immediate assistance and long-term solutions for some of the most vulnerable people who have faced displacement and are trying to rebuild their lives.”
