AKDN leader Karim Aga Khan dies at 88

KABUL (Pajhwok): Prince Karim Aga Khan, leader of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, has passed away at the age of 88 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Born in Switzerland, he had British citizenship and lived in a chateau in France.

In a statement on its X handle, AKDN confirmed the news, saying an announcement regarding his successor would be made later on.

AKDN offered its “condolences to the family of Karim Aga Khan and to the Ismaili community worldwide.

AKDN has 69,000 employees and an annual budget of nearly $1 billion. It provides healthcare, housing, education, and rural economic development services in over 30 countries.

The organisation also runs Aga Khan hospitals in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Tajikistan.
