China’s import taxes on US goods go into effect

KABUL (Pajhwok): Amid an intensifying trade war between the world's leading economies, China is implementing import taxes on some American goods today (Monday).

China's tariffs on US goods included a 15% border tax on imports of US coal and liquefied natural gas products, the BBC reported.

In a tit-for-tat response to President Donald Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports from China, Beijing also slapped a 10% tax on American crude oil, agricultural machinery and large-engine cars.

China has also slapped export controls on 25 rare metals, some of which are used in electrical products and military equipment.

Last week, China initiated an anti-monopoly probe into Google and put PVH, the US owner of designer brands Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, on its "unreliable entity" list.

China has hit out at the United States for levelling "unfounded and false allegations" about its role in the trade of the synthetic opioid fentanyl to justify the tariffs.

The US import taxes were "discriminatory and protectionist" and violated trade rules, Chin claimed in a complaint lodged with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
