KABUL (Pajhwok): The 16th edition of Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Provincial Grade-1 tournament kicked off today (Monday), the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced on Monday.
ACB wrote on its Facebook page four matches were being played on the opening day of the event.
Khost are poised to take on Faryab at the Kandahar Cricket Stadium, while Helmand meet ACB XI at the same venue.
Nangarhar will face Kunduz at the Najibullah Taraki ground. ACB XI-2 will compete with Kabul at the same ground.
The tournament will continue until February 24, with participating teams divided into two groups.
The event follows a one-day format, with a total of 33 matches scheduled to take place over 15 days, at the Kandahar Cricket Stadium and Najibullah Tarakai Ground in Nangarhar.
Each side will compete once against every other team in their respective group. Two teams with the most points in each group will advance to the semi-finals.
Nangarhar, Kunduz, Kabul, Khost A, ACB XI-2 and Chairman XI are placed in Group A.
Group B is comprised of Helmand, Khost, Faryab, Kabul A, ACB XI and Chairman XI-2.
Kabul-B had clinched the title of Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Provincial Grade-1 tournament last year.
