MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): The Para-Olympic Federation in northern Balkh province says a three-day wheelchair handball tournament, featuring 50 players was held in the province.
Bashir Ahmad, head of the Para-Olympic Federation in the northern zone, told Pajhwok Afghan News the tournament started on Monday and concluded today with Hedayat team winning the championship.
He stated that players from Kunduz, Samangan, Balkh, Jawzjan, Sar-i-Pul, and Faryab provinces participated in the event. Hedayat team secured first place, while Super Kola team finished runners-up.
Bashir Ahmad emphasized that the purpose of these competitions was to encourage people with disabilities and showcase their capabilities to society.
Meanwhile, the participating players urged other young people, especially those with disabilities, to engage in sports.
Yousuf Mohammadi, a participant from Faryab province, expressed his happiness about taking part in the tournament and encouraged other young individuals, particularly those with disabilities, to pursue sports.
Javid, a member of the Hedayat team from Balkh, described the tournament as a great opportunity to motivate people with disabilities. He called on the caretaker government and businessmen to provide support to disabled players.
He added that "disability is not a limit" and urged other disabled individuals to engage in sports for better health.
On the other hand, officials of sports and physical training department assured their support for athletes.
Najibullah Himmat, director of the department, stated that Balkh province has recently hosted several tournaments and was striving to provide support to athletes across the country, especially in Balkh.
This tournament comes after Balkh province previously hosted a wheelchair basketball competition.
