KABUL (Pajhwok): A two-day winter taekwondo contest titled “Struggle against Air Pollution” launched by the Kabul Municipality started here on Sunday, officials said.
The event featuring 110 taekwondo players from 10 clubs will last for two days.
At the opening ceremony, municipality’s cultural affairs director Qari Wali Gull Jawad said the contests involved 110 athletes from 10 taekwondo clubs of Kabul city.
To positively benefit youth’s efforts in the cultural sector, the Winter Taekwondo Cup is being held under the theme of preventing air pollution, Jawad said.
The Kabul municipality has 14 different athletic teams and a number of their players use to participate in such games on international level.
The director of sports department of the municipality Farid Ahmad told Pajhwok Afghan News these competitions will be held in three age categories.
Milad Ahmad, one of the participants of these contests, said such games were important and those exhibiting impressive talent could qualify for the national taekwondo team.
He asked officials of the National Taekwondo Federation to launch more such contests for the development of this sport.
Currently 15 Afghan taekwondo players are participating in the Asian Taekwondo Open Contests in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, with four of them scheduled to enter the ring against their opponents today.
