GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Meenawal Zalmay have won the Sultan Mohammad Ghaznavi T20 cricket tournament in southern Ghazni province, defeating Dubai Petroleum by 11 runs in the final.
The tournament began about a month and a half ago with 10 teams participating. Meenawal Zalmay and Dubai Petroleum advanced to the final after strong performances throughout the competition.
Meenawal Zalmay produced an all-round performance in the final to secure the title with an 11-run victory over Dubai Petroleum.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Ghazni Cricket Director Abdul Wadud Paktial said club-level tournaments were important for keeping players active and improving their skills.
“Regular club-level competitions give players an opportunity to showcase their abilities, gain experience and better prepare for second-tier competitions,” he said.
Paktial said continued competitions among clubs were important for the development of cricket in Ghazni and could help identify talented players.
Arif, a participant in the tournament, told Pajhwok that cricket had many fans in Ghazni and that regular competitions could provide young people with healthy activities while creating opportunities for emerging talent.
“There are many cricket fans in Ghazni. Regular competitions encourage young people to practise and showcase their talents. Such competitions should continue rather than be limited to a single tournament,” he said.
Another player, Mohammad Noor, said his team had trained well for the tournament and that winning the title was important, but regular competitions were more important for improving players’ experience and abilities.
“Continued club competitions are a valuable opportunity for players. We hope more tournaments will be held and opportunities for young players to play will be expanded,” he said.
A 50-over 2026 inter-club cricket tournament involving 24 clubs in Ghazni also concluded about a month ago after nearly two months of competition.
