ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Construction work has been initiated on a five-kilometre long agriculture canal in Ghaziabad district of eastern Kunar province, an official announced on Wednesday.
Funded by the World Food Programme (WFP), the project will take three months to complete, Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Director Maulvi Abdullah Himat told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the canal will irrigate approximately 650 jeribs of land, significantly benefiting local farmers.
"This agricultural canal is being constructed in the Nishgam area of Ghaziabad district. The project is funded by WFP and is being implemented with technical assistance of Schiphol Organization. The project is expected to be completed within three months," he explained.
He added the project will provide employment opportunities for 350 local workers, offering much-needed financial relief to the community.
Meanwhile, residents of the district also voiced satisfaction over the construction of the canal.
They stated it will bring water to previously barren lands and increase agricultural productivity.
"I am delighted that a new irrigation canal is being built for our farmlands. It will boost our agricultural yield and create job opportunities for people in the area," said Haji Sultan Jan, a tribal elder from Nishgam.
Residents also urged the government and aid organisations to implement more developmental and mechanised farming projects to develop agriculture in the region.
