KABUL (Pajhwok): The survey and design work for the water supply project from Panjsher to Kabul has been completed and practical work on the scheme will begin in the near future, an official said on Monday.
Acting Minister of Energy and Water Mullah Abdul Latif Mansour made the announcement at a meeting with tribal elders and community representatives from various districts of Kabul,
A statement from the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW) quoted Mansour as saying that effective measures had been taken to address the electricity shortage challenge in Kabul.
He said the 10-megawatt solar power project in Naghlu had been executed.
The transmission line project from Turkmenistan to Arghandi was progressing well, and once completed, it would help end power shortages in Kabul and neighbouring provinces, he explained.
The minister announced the survey and design work for the Panjsher-Kabul water supply project had been completed successfully.
He added practical work on the project would be initiated once the availability of funds and other essential resources was ensured.
Once executed, the project will have the capacity to transfer two cubic metres of water per second and will provide clean drinking water to approximately two million residents of Kabul.
The Panjsher River water supply project, which will take water from the Bazarak area of Panjsher to the Tarakhel locality of Kabul, is estimated to cost 170 million US dollars,. The government-funded scheme is expected to be completed in three years.
