OIC adopts Arab League plan for Gaza reconstruction

KABUL (Pajhwok): The world’s largest Islamic bloc has endorsed an Arab League counter-proposal to US President Donald Trump’s plan to take over Gaza and displace its residents.

AFP reported the Islamic Cooperation Organisation (OIC) took the decision at an emergency meeting in Jeddah on Friday — three days after the Arab League approved the plan.

Floated by Egypt, the plan suggests the reconstruction of the devastated Gaza Strip under the future administration of the Palestinian Authority.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty was quoted as saying: “The emergency ministerial meeting of OIC adopted the plan, which has now become an Arab-Islamic plan.”

Earlier, the US president had proposed Gaza’s takeover by his country and forcing its Palestinian inhabitants to relocate to Egypt or Jordan — a suggestion that drew global denunciation.

While scorning Trump’s suggestion, Arab leaders, at a summit in Cairo on Tuesday, unveiled a trust fund for rebuilding Gaza. They also sought global support for the fund.

Abdelatty told AFP: “The next step is for the plan to become an international plan through adoption by the European Union and international parties such as Japan, Russia, China and others.”

The Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC also restored the membership of Syria, which was suspended in 2012 early in the civil war under Bashar al-Assad.

In a statement, the Syrian foreign ministry said: “This decision represents an important step towards Syria’s return to the regional and international communities as a free and just state.”
