18m SIM cards registered, says ministry

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) says about 18 million SIM cards have been registered since the launch of the documentation programme in the country.

Inayatullah Alokozai, spokesman for MoCIT, acknowledged the issue of illegal SIM card sales in the market after the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) takeover.

He wrote on his X handle MoCIT had thrashed out a plan curbing the practice and shared it with telecom firms.

He said about 18 million SIM cards had been registered since the procedure was initiated in 2021 and the process was proceeding across the country.

He estimated around 26 million SIM cards were currently active across the country. Of them, 18 million have been registered in accordance with the regulations.

The process of registering the remaining SIM cards was ongoing apace, the official concluded.
