28m afs canal constructed in Badakhshan

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A canal has been constructed at a cost of 28 million afghanis in the Kiran Wa Manjan district of northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Sunday.

Hafiz Maulvi Naqibullah Furqani, director of the engineering department at the Panjsher Brigade, said the canal, 5.2 kilometres long, 20 metres wide and three metres deep, had been executed in Eskazar village.

He said approximately 7,000 acres of land, previously barren and threatened by a river in the area, would be protected and converted into agriculture land with the execution of the canal.

He added the canal would also protect at least 1,000 residential houses in the area from flooding.

He explained a vast area was under constant threat from the river, forcing multiple families to share a single home near the mountains due to lack of proper residential houses.

Rahimullah, an official from the engineering department responsible for the canal design and planning, said the project took one and half months to complete.

Abdul Yasin, a resident of the Eskazar village of the district, said previously, no canal existed in the area and large tracts of land were under constant threat from river water and floods.

He urged the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) to construct retaining walls in the village.
