Ex-BD skipper suffers heart attack on field

KABUL (Pajhwok): Bangladesh’s former skipper Tamim Iqbal was rushed to hospital on Monday after suffering a heart attack, a media report said.

The 36-year-old cricketer, captaining Mohammedan Sporting Club in a 50-over Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match, suffered the heart attack on the field.

According to AFP, Tamim took part in the toss before complaining of chest pain. After initial treatment on the field, he was taken to hospital.

A medical officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) told the news agency: “He suffered a heart attack. What I know so far is that his heart started to function better.”

He is currently under treatment at a hospital in Savar on Dhaka’s outskirts, according to Tariqul Islam, a team official, who asked people to pray for his swift recovery.

Between 2007 and 2023, Tamim represented Bangladesh in 391 matches across all formats, scoring over 15,000 international runs.

BCB chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury  told reporters following initial check-ups at a local hospital, efforts were made to airlift him to Dhaka.

But on the way to the helipad, he said, the cricketer experienced a massive heart attack and had to be rushed back to the medical facility.
