2 killed, 3 wounded in Badakhshan natural disasters

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Two individuals have been killed and three others injured as a result of natural disasters in northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Sunday.

Information and Culture Director Eng. Zabihullah Amiri told Pajhwok Afghan News the Faizabad-Baharak highway had closed in Targani, Aab Afchak and Payanshahr village of Baharak district due to  Saturday’s flooding.

“On Sunday morning, the 219th Omar Sales Division’s machinery, in coordination with the Public Works Department, started clearing the Faizabad-Baharak road of flood sediments. God willing, the road will reopen soon,” he added.

Work on clearing roads in Juram, Yamgan, Karan Wa Manjan, Shuhada, Warduj, Zebak, Ishkashim, Wakhan and Shaghnan districts, which were blocked two days ago due to floods, is continuing.

Disaster management official Maulvi Mohammad Akram Akbari said at least two individuals had been killed and three others injured in natural disasters.

He explained the casualties occurred in of Ab Afchak and Payanshahr areas of Baharak district due to flash floods and lightning strikes.

Three people were injured due to heavy rain and the destruction of a residential house in the Ghani village of Warduj district. They were transferred to a health centre.

Overnight floods in the Koh ar, Hazrat Syed, Dasht Gharami and the Yamkan Bazaar district caused huge financial losses to the residents, Akbari added.

The damage caused by Friday night’s floods in Juram, which destroyed dozens of residential homes, agricultural canals, drinking water networks, roads, orchards on hundreds of acres and agricultural land, had been surveyed and aid would be sent to the affected people.
