KABUL (Pajhwok): Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One-Day Internationals (ODIs), bringing an end to a remarkable 13-year career in the format.
Maxwell made his ODI debut in August 2012 and went on to represent Australia in 149 matches, scoring 3,990 runs and claiming 77 wickets.
Known for his explosive batting and dynamic presence on the field, he played a key role in some of Australia’s most memorable ODI moments.
Cricket Australia described Maxwell as “the man behind some of Australia’s most memorable one-day moments” in their statement following his retirement.
The 36-year-old all-rounder revealed that he had informed selection chief George Bailey during February’s Champions Trophy that he didn’t see himself continuing in the format through to the 2027 World Cup.
“I said to him right then and there, ‘I don’t think I’m going to make that’,” Maxwell shared on the Final Word podcast. “I think it’s time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully, they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role.”
Maxwell, a two-time ODI World Cup winner, continues to manage a left leg injury sustained in a serious accident in 2022, which played a role in his decision to step away from the 50-over format.
