KABUL (Pajhwok): At least six people have been killed and several others injured after a building housing students collapsed in Delhi, the capital of India.
The building collapsed on Sunday in southern Delhi, near several colleges and universities, while rescuers searched the debris for anyone who might still be trapped, Reuters reported.
Local media reported that the building had a basement and five upper floors and was being used to accommodate students.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta told reporters that water had accumulated in the building’s basement while repair work was underway, which she said contributed to the collapse of the old building.
Visuals from the site showed piles of bricks and broken concrete pillars, while police, rescuers and local residents searched for survivors trapped under the rubble.
Gupta said six people who were rescued alive and taken to a nearby hospital were in stable condition.
Police were searching for the owner of the building, television channels reported.
Building collapses occur frequently in India, particularly in densely populated urban neighbourhoods where unauthorised construction is widespread and enforcement of building regulations is weak.
