Kabul City road network reform plan approved

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Kabul Municipality has announced that the "Reform Plan for the Road Network of Kabul City" has been officially approved and endorsed.

In a statement, the municipality said the plan aims to address the current and future needs of residents while laying the groundwork for balanced and sustainable development in the capital.

Over the past two decades, Kabul has faced serious challenges—particularly in unplanned areas—due to an unprecedented population increase, unregulated urban sprawl, and the delayed implementation of urban master plans.

Eng. Faiq Ahmad Tasal, Director of Urban Infrastructure at Kabul Municipality, stated that to overcome these challenges, the road network outlined in the Kabul Urban Design Framework Plan (approved in 2017) was reviewed and revised.

He noted that the previous plan contained multiple shortcomings and failed to meet the city’s real and evolving needs.

“This process was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing. Following the completion of all legal procedures, the Reform Plan for Kabul’s Road Network has now been officially approved,” he said.

According to the statement, Kabul Municipality has already begun construction work on roads, prioritizing them based on importance and urgency.

“As citizens are aware, roads not only play a vital role in facilitating transport and mobility, but they also serve as the backbone of other urban infrastructure networks—including water supply, telecommunications, fiber optics, electricity, sewage systems, and green corridors,” the statement added.

With the successful implementation of this plan, Kabul is expected to evolve into a city with a more coherent structure, improved access to essential services, and a healthier urban environment.

The statement concluded that these initiatives will not only enhance residents' quality of life but will also stimulate economic growth, attract investment, and elevate Kabul’s status as a modern, sustainable city.
