KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has welcomed parts of a recently adopted United Nations General Assembly’s resolution concerning the country.
However, the caretaker government expressed concern over the lack of consultation with the IEA, raising questions about the accuracy and applicability of certain aspects of the resolution.
Titled “The Situation in Afghanistan”, the resolution was adopted on Monday with 116 votes in favour, two against (Israel and the United States) and 12 abstentions.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the caretaker government said it viewed positively the resolution’s acknowledgement of the IEA’s achievements in maintaining security and combating narcotics, its call for humanitarian aid to the Afghan people, removal of obstacles to economic development and its emphasis on constructive engagement with Afghanistan free from geopolitical competition.
However, the ministry criticised the resolution’s reliance on previous UN resolutions, reports and assessments—particularly those concerning security and human rights—describing it as a continuation of a narrative shaped by pressure from certain countries and disconnected from on-the-ground realities.
The statement noted that although the resolution addresses the situation in Afghanistan and includes calls for cooperation with the Islamic Emirate, the IEA is not consulted during its drafting or adoption.
This, the ministry said, casts doubt on the resolution’s credibility and practical relevance.
The statement added that IEA would assess the resolution’s recommendations and proposals within the framework of Islamic principles and national interests and identify potential areas for cooperation.
