FAO to build 120 cold storage units in six provinces

KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will construct 120 zero-energy cold storage units for onions in six provinces of Afghanistan with financial support from the World Band (WB).

FAO’s office in Afghanistan wrote on its Facebook page that each cold storage unit would have the capacity to store 20 metric tonnes of onions.

The initiative is aimed at reducing food wastage and helping farmers preserve onions for longer periods, thereby increasing their incomes.

The organisation said the cold storage units would be set up in Paktia, Ghazni, Daikundi, Ghor, Badakhshan and Kandahar provinces, but it did not provide details about the cost of the project.

Earlier, on 31 July, FAO had announced plans to build 240 zero-energy cold storage units for potatoes in Afghanistan, with each unit capable of storing 30 metric tonnes.
