Japan, Russia send aid to Afghan quake victims

KABUL (Pajhwok): Emergency aid for earthquake victims has arrived in Kabul from Japan, while Russia has also dispatched its first shipment of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

On Friday morning, Japan’s emergency aid — including tents and blankets — arrived in Kabul and was handed over to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Afghan Red Crescent Society.

The Embassy of Japan in Afghanistan announced on X that the aid will soon be distributed to those affected by the earthquake in the eastern provinces.

The statement also reaffirmed Japan’s continued support for the people of Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has sent its first shipment of humanitarian aid to the earthquake-hit regions in eastern Afghanistan.

Russian media reported that the shipment, which includes 20 tons of food supplies, was sent on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Hamidullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, said on Thursday that the death toll from the earthquake in Kunar province has risen to 2,205, with 3,640 others injured. Rescue operations are still underway.

The earthquake struck around midnight on Sunday, affecting the provinces of Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Nuristan and Panjshir — with Kunar bearing the brunt of the casualties and destruction.
