IEA releases US citizens from detention

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) has released a US citizen, Amir Amiri, from custody.

Foreign Minister Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi announced the release during a meeting with a US delegation led by Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Boehler, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said in a statement.

Muttaqi confirmed that Amiri had been freed on Sunday, emphasizing that the Afghan government does not approach issues concerning foreign nationals from a political standpoint.

He underscored that diplomacy offers viable pathways for resolving such matters.

The minister described the release as a positive step and thanked the State of Qatar for its effective role in facilitating prisoner releases between the IEA and the United States.

Boehler welcomed the decision, calling it a positive development. He also noted that previous rounds of discussions between the IEA and the US had been constructive, expressing hope that dialogue would continue on outstanding issues.
