Internet cut triggers nationwide telecoms blackout

Afghanistan faced a second day without internet and mobile phone service on Tuesday, after the interim authorities cut the fibre optic network.

On Monday night, mobile phone signal and internet service gradually weakened nationwide until connectivity was less than one per cent of ordinary levels, according to internet watchdog NetBlocks.

According to Netblocks, Afghanistan is currently facing a widespread and complete telecommunications blackout, with internet access cut off in almost the entire country.

International news agencies reported losing contact with their offices in Kabul and mobile internet, satellite broadcasts, and telecommunications networks have been severely affected.

Some sources say that flights from Kabul airport have also been disrupted, with at least eight flights canceled.

The Islamic Emirate has not yet announced an official position on the blackout, but a Communications and Information Technology official said that this situation would continue indefinitely.

Officials had previously said that the step was taken to “prevent vice” and that they would create an alternative route if necessary.

Experts say that the internet and communications shutdown will not only severely affect people’s daily lives, but will also cause serious disruption to many sectors, including business, banking, education, and health services.
